Breakfast buffet is the best thing during a vacay, but it can also create a lot of anxiety and guilt for someone really wanting to watch what they eat.
Meanwhile it can also be overwhelming to see such extensive variety spread to be chosen to eat for one meal and often people end up overeating and regretting it later. So how to manage this? I am not here to tell you to not eat them all and stick to your cereal bowl.. Its important to be wise and choosy in-order to enjoy everything without damaging the habits and digestion.
Recently I had been to Taj for a short holiday and I was mind-blown by the variety of items they had to offer me in their breakfast buffet. And the worst part is everything was looking amazing and hard to choose between each other. I being a small eater would make me feel sick if I stuff things till my neck !! This generally happens in every holiday I go and here is what I do to make the best of it without overeating and feeling bad later.
1. Screen through whats spread out on the table
Do not start eating as soon as you get into the dining hall. Go around and scan through whats in the menu. This will help you choose things wisely.
2. Take advantage of fresh things available
I am sure you already know about this , however I would like to reiterate on this - choose the fresh food over preserved ones. For example, choose omlette over sausages, fresh juice over canned juice and fruits over juice.
3. Decide what and how much you want to eat
I know it might be the toughest part but trust me this really helps. Once you scan through the option available, decide on what all items you want to try out. It can be those freshly baked section or the fruits or the Indian breakfast, make a rough estimation of how many items you want to try. This will help you decide the portion and avoid over eating.
4. Choose the options that you dont generally eat otherwise at home
This is my most favourite part. Choose the fancier foods that you probably wont cook at home otherwise, like that fancy looking sandwich over the regular poha or idli or those variety or fresh cheese over the regular paratha or dosa. This way you get to enjoy the special variety and you feel satisfied of eating from a different menu.
5. Watch out for the portion you serve on your plate
Based on how many items you have decided to choose, serve the portion on your plate, more the items you want to try, lesser the portion size. Ultimately, when you finish eating your breakfast, you should neither feel stuffed, nor feel empty. That comfortable feeling gives you the happiness of eating everything yet not feeling guilty about over eating. Imagine you want to try 10 items you might only take a bite of each items. So how do you get the most of its taste? by eating as slow as you can. Remember the taste buds are on your tongue and once you swallow food you wont be able to relish the taste. So eating slowly will help you get the satiety of taste and automatically you will feel content about what you have eaten.
Finally to put everything in a nutshell, you definitely can eat everything thats offered, but its in your hand how you handle the urge to stuff everything in your mouth and regret it later. And one last tip to end is to have this huge breakfast like a brunch and skip the lunch so that you dont overboard the overall day's intake. And its okay to do once in a while , after all its a holiday, but remember this is not a license to use this hack for a regular day.
Cheers !
